Sr Advanced Safety Systems Engineer

Location: Canonsburg, PA
Duration: Long-Term Contract
Schedule: 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off)

ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:
CPI has an immediate opening for a Senior Advanced Safety Systems Engineer supporting the Torpedo Systems Group. The selected engineer will be responsible for identifying, classifying, and mitigating system safety hazards as part of the overall systems engineering process. This includes performing requirements analysis, functional and performance analysis, interface definition, test verification, and validation for systems and subsystems.
This position will focus on personnel and operational safety, ensuring compliance with applicable system safety standards and supporting risk-based design decisions. The engineer will collaborate with Program Management, Technical Leadership, and Customers to influence architecture, design, and technology solutions for safety-significant systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform safety hazard identification, classification, and mitigation as part of systems engineering.

Conduct requirements definition, traceability, and management to ensure safety compliance.

Execute functional, performance, and interface analyses of system and subsystem elements.

Support system integration, test, and verification of safety-significant hardware and software.

Develop and document test plans, test procedures, and reports, including safety validation.

Participate in system safety assessments in accordance with established military and industry standards.

Prepare and present test strategies, plans, and results to internal and external stakeholders.

Contribute to the design and implementation of test and troubleshooting procedures for complex systems.

Document and analyze testing issues, anomalies, and corrective actions.

Serve as a technical leader for safety system design and mentor other engineers within the team.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering or a related Science, Engineering, or Mathematics field.

Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree + 6 years of experience.

Demonstrated experience with systems engineering principles and processes.

Knowledge of safety-critical systems design and hazard analysis.

Experience with hardware and software integration and verification testing.

Strong technical documentation and communication skills.

Agile development experience preferred.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance.

U.S. Citizenship required due to government contract requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Familiarity with system safety standards and handbooks, including MIL-STD-882E, JSSSEH, AOP-52, JOTP-51, and MIL-HDBK-2155.

Proven leadership in safety system architecture and design for complex defense programs.

Experience preparing cost and schedule estimates for engineering design and safety tasks.

Demonstrated technical excellence in systems engineering and safety assurance.

Experience developing and maintaining requirements traceability through the full system lifecycle.

Skilled in negotiation and consensus-building across cross-functional and customer teams.

Strong presentation and communication abilities for both technical and non-technical audiences.
