Cyber Software Development Engineer
Job Description
Location: Sterling Heights, MI
Pay Rate: $63–$70/hour
Position Overview
Join an agile, self-motivated engineering team responsible for developing and supporting embedded cyber solutions for a family of ground combat vehicles. This role supports the Cyber and C5ISR product realization team, contributing to architecture development, embedded software implementation, evaluation, testing, and compliance across ground combat platforms.
This is a hands-on embedded software engineering role focused on secure system integration within a Security-Enhanced Linux environment.
Key Responsibilities

Develop embedded cyber software for target hardware platforms

Apply computer science, engineering, and mathematical principles to software development

Collaborate cross-functionally to define hardware/software interfaces and system performance requirements

Participate in all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC):

Requirements analysis

Design

Implementation

Integration

Formal testing

Develop and maintain software tools, scripts, and XML configuration files

Ensure software compliance with accreditation and configuration control requirements

Develop protocol transformation mechanisms enabling secure interoperability between data domains

Perform low-level programming in embedded Linux or VxWorks environments

Integrate and configure firewalls to protect embedded systems
-
Participate in peer reviews and defect resolution

Conduct cyber trade studies related to test design, environments, and tool selection

Develop and review technical artifacts and CDRLs for contract compliance
Minimum Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline (Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution

Strong programming skills in C, C++, C#, Java, or Rust (embedded focus preferred)

Experience with Linux or VxWorks operating system internals

Experience with Board Support Packages (BSP) and hardware/software integration

Experience with low-level device driver development
-
Knowledge of network protocols and interfaces (TCP/IP, UART, SPI, I2C)

Experience across SDLC phases including architecture, requirements, integration, and testing

Familiarity with IDEs, version control systems, defect tracking, scripting, and CI/CD pipelines

Experience interpreting customer requirements and flowing them down to technical implementation

Familiarity with electronic hardware troubleshooting

Cybersecurity knowledge applied to embedded systems

Cybersecurity certifications (CISSP, CEH) are a plus
Mandatory Qualifications
-
Active DoD Secret clearance or higher (required)
-
Experience developing and implementing cybersecurity protections for embedded systems

Experience in embedded systems within automotive or military environments
-
Flexibility to work non-duty hours or weekends as required
-
Must meet anthropometric size restrictions for military vehicle access and be able to climb vehicles and pass through hatches
