Fluid Systems Engineer
Job Description
Location: Sterling Heights, MI
Pay Rate: $52.70 –$60.03/hr
Workplace: Onsite (Hybrid not available due to program requirements)
About the Role
This contractor role supports Staff Mechanical Engineering leadership with a primary focus on fluid and distributed systems for ground combat vehicles. The engineer will provide technical oversight across hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, cooling, fire suppression, and auxiliary vehicle systems while contributing to design execution, mentoring, standardization, and cross-functional coordination.
This position plays a key role in solving complex mechanical and fluid system challenges while interfacing with internal teams, suppliers, and customers to meet performance, safety, and contract requirements.
Responsibilities to Anticipate

Design and release vehicle subsystems and components to meet performance, safety, environmental, ballistic, and mine blast requirements

Lead requirement decomposition, design, integration, analysis, and release of fluid and mechanical systems

Develop and support hydraulic actuation, pneumatic systems, fuel systems, fire suppression, cooling distribution, winch, fairlead, and auxiliary vehicle systems

Apply mechanics of materials, welding, fabrication, and material selection principles

Perform design analysis, tolerance stack-ups, drawing markups, and generate engineering change source data

Support prototype builds, production vehicles, integration reviews, fit checks, and sustainment activities

Write material requests, shop work requests, technical reports, and corrective action documentation

Conduct failure analysis and lead troubleshooting and redesign efforts

Manage cross-functional engineering tasks and support multiple vehicle programs

Present design concepts, technical risks, program status, and issues to engineering leadership and program management

Interface with customers and internal stakeholders to translate vehicle needs into subsystem and component requirements
Qualifications Sought

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, or Mechatronic Engineering
-
10+ years of relevant engineering experience preferred

Strong background in fluid systems (hydraulic, pneumatic, cooling, fuel, or suppression systems)

Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and complex engineering tasks

Proficiency with NX and/or Creo for 3D modeling and design

Experience with Teamcenter and Vis Mockup preferred

Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical information clearly
Additional Information / Desired Experience
-
Eligibility to obtain a U.S. Security clearance required

Prior experience supporting ground combat vehicle programs strongly preferred

Demonstrated experience developing fluid system architectures, schematics, analytical models, and troubleshooting solutions

Ability to work in and around military vehicles and pass ASR (Anthropometric Size Requirement) testing

Willingness to support occasional evening/weekend work and travel up to 10%

Strong organizational skills with a continuous improvement mindset
